There are several types of cancers and lung cancer is a predominant one among them. Here are a few things one should follow as a precaution to keep their lungs healthy and string.

Stop Smoking

Everyone knows that smoking can increase the risk of lung cancer. But smoking not only causes lung problems but it also aggravates the risk of COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and asthma. It can also make the disease severe. Smoking a cigarette means one inhales thousands if chemicals into the lungs that includes tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. These toxins can actually damage your lungs. It irritates and inflames the tissues. It makes difficult for one to breathe by narrowing the airways. So quitting smoking can definitely help. Once you stop smoking, the carbon monoxide level in your body becomes normal. Also the lung functions begin to improve. Yes, quitting smoking might not look easy but it has a lot of benefits.

Exercise to breathe harder

One has to exercise regularly to keep your lungs and other body parts healthy. When one exercises regularly, the lungs start to work harder. As a result the body needs more oxygen and fuel to the muscles. The lungs step up their activities and expel additional carbon dioxide in this process. Studies say when one exercises regularly the breathing capacity increases up to 15 times a minute. They are really good for lungs. The muscle between the rubs expand and contract and so the air sacs present inside the lungs work fast to exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide.

Avoid exposure to pollutants

Exposure to pollutants in the air can damage your lungs and accelerate bad things. When you are young and strong, your lungs can easily resist these toxins. But as you get older you lose some of that resistance and become more vulnerable to infections and disease. Try to avoid passive smoking as they are equally dangerous like active smoking. Also try to avoid external pollution as much as you can. You can use a mask whenever you go out. If you are exposed to pollutants at work, be sure to take all possible safety precautions. Certain jobs in construction, mining, and waste management can increase risk of exposure to airborne pollutants. Also keep in check the indoor pollution quotient. Try to make your home a smoke free zone. Dust and vacuum the rooms and furniture at least once a week. Avoid synthetic air fresheners and candles that can expose you to additional chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene. Instead, use an aromatherapy diffuser and essential oils to more naturally scent the air. Use natural cleaning products when possible and open a window when using products that can create fumes.
